facing the forest

I (kreig) am working on translating HP Lovecraft's "The Street" into Lojban, and have come across the following problematic phrase:

cabins of stout oaken logs with masonry on the side toward the forest

kpreid and I have discussed this on IRC and are a bit puzzled.
